Kunihiko Matsui, AIA
Kunihiko Matsui was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1960, and moved to the United States to pursue a career in architecture. He earned Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design degrees from Ball State University in 1988, which included an overseas study program, “Polyark” and an internship at Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf in Indianapolis, Indiana. These opportunities expanded his practical training. After completing his education at Ball State with a outstanding thesis award, he moved to northeastern Pennsylvania to continue his training.
Before starting his own practice in Oct.1999, he spent 10 years at Hemmler + Camayd Architects in Scranton as a project architect for numerous projects, including the NatWest Office Building at Montage and the Federal Courthouse in Scranton. During the last few years at the firm, he joined the firm management as an associate.
With encouragement and help from James Rogers, a fellow architect and owner of James Rogers Architects, Inc., Matsui started his own practice. He has collaborated with Mr. Rogers on many projects including two large scale Japanese style residential projects.
Matsui has been focusing his practice on energy-efficient residential and small commercial projects in Northeastern Pennsylvania and does not hesitate to collaborate with green building-certified energy consultants and local contractors to expand his knowledge and practice. He has also established close working relationships with local builders and craftsmen in an effort to reunite architects and builders and streamline the design and building process. The benefits of collaboration are cost control and provide additional opportunities for Matsui to offer design build and construction services to his clients.
